New EVs and Home Charging: What Every New Model Needs

A new EV changes two things about your home charging setup: the plug on the charger and the size of the circuit worth installing. This page lists 26 current and newly launched models with their charge port, the most AC power they accept, and the circuit that charges them at full speed. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's own site, linked under each model, and the page is updated as new models launch.

Choosing the Charger and Circuit for Any New EV

Match the plug or use an adapter. A NACS car can use a J1772 charger with an adapter and vice versa — see NACS vs J1772 home chargers.

Size the circuit to the car, not the charger. A car charges no faster than its own onboard limit, so a 48A charger on a car that accepts 32A only costs more wire. Our guides to Level 1 vs Level 2 and panel upgrades cover what your home can supply.

Budget for the install. See EV charger installation cost and who issues the permit in your city.

Frequently Asked Questions

What home charger does a new EV need?

Two things decide it: the charge port and the maximum AC charging rate. Most 2025-and-later EVs from US brands have moved to the NACS (Tesla-style) port, while many earlier models use J1772. A charger with the wrong plug works with an adapter, but buying the matching plug is simpler. The AC rate decides how big a circuit is worth installing: a car that accepts 48A needs a 60A circuit to charge at full speed; a car limited to 32A gains nothing from more.

Why does a 48A charger need a 60A circuit?

EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit must be rated at 125% of the charging current. 48A × 1.25 = 60A, 40A × 1.25 = 50A, 32A × 1.25 = 40A, and 80A × 1.25 = 100A. Your electrician sizes the wire and breaker to match.

Why does this page say "not yet published" for some specs?

Every figure here comes from the manufacturer’s own website or newsroom. For newly revealed models, manufacturers often do not publish the charge port or onboard charging rate until close to delivery. We leave those blank rather than copy estimates from other sites, and fill them in once the manufacturer publishes them.

Do I need a permit to install a charger for a new EV?

Almost always, if the work adds a 240V circuit. The permit is pulled by your licensed electrician; see our guide to EV charger permits for who issues them in your city.
