Honda Prologue & VW ID.4 Home Charging: Why a NACS Charger Won't Plug In
Most EVs launching for 2026–2027 have moved to the Tesla-style NACS port — but the 2026 Honda Prologue and 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 have not. Both have a CCS port, which takes a J1772 plug for home charging. Several car sites list them as NACS; the manufacturers' own pages say otherwise.
The Adapter Trap
Both cars come with, or offer, a NACS adapter — and it is easy to assume that means a NACS home charger will work. It may not:
- VW ID.4: Volkswagen says its NACS-to-CCS adapter is not designed for use with Level 1 or Level 2 AC charging equipment, including home chargers. It is for DC fast charging at Superchargers only.
- Honda Prologue: Honda's accessory is a "NACS-CCS adapter" for fast charging. The car's own port is CCS.
So buy the J1772 version of your home charger. If you already own a NACS charger, you need a separate adapter rated for AC charging — ask your electrician before relying on one. See NACS vs J1772 home chargers.
Circuit Size
Volkswagen says the ID.4 charges at up to 11 kW with its available home wall charger, typically in up to 8 hours. Honda does not publish the Prologue's maximum AC rate on its own pages, so ask your dealer or check the owner's manual before sizing the circuit. For an 11 kW car, a 48A J1772 charger on a dedicated 60A circuit is the standard full-speed install (EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is rated at 125% of the charging current). A plug-in charger on a 50A NEMA 14-50 outlet is limited to 40A — a little slower, and often a simpler install.
Honda's Home Charger Offer
The 2026 Prologue comes standard with a portable charger, and Honda's 2026 offer lets buyers choose a complimentary home charging station with up to $1,250 of installation credit, or a $500 sales credit instead. Offers change — confirm what applies with your dealer before paying for an install yourself.
What Installation Involves
- Panel check — can it carry a new 60A (or 50A) circuit?
- Permit — pulled by your electrician; see who issues EV charger permits in your city.
- Circuit and charger — a dedicated 240V run, then the charger mounted and connected.
- Inspection — the permit closes after the local inspection.
Cost depends mostly on the distance from your panel and whether it has room — see EV charger installation cost and rebates by state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 2026 Honda Prologue have a NACS port?
No. Honda sells a "NACS-CCS adapter" for the Prologue, which is how a CCS-port car uses Tesla Superchargers. At home, buy a J1772 charger — or a NACS charger only with an adapter rated for AC charging.
Can I use the VW NACS adapter with a home charger?
No. Volkswagen says its NACS-to-CCS adapter is not designed for use with Level 1 or Level 2 AC charging equipment, including home chargers — it is for DC fast charging. A 2026 ID.4 owner should install a J1772 home charger.
How fast does the VW ID.4 charge at home?
Volkswagen says the ID.4 charges at up to 11 kW with its available home wall charger, typically taking up to 8 hours. A 48A Level 2 charger on a 60A circuit delivers that comfortably.
Does Honda include a home charger with the Prologue?
The 2026 Prologue comes standard with a portable charger. Honda's 2026 offer also lets buyers choose a complimentary home charging station with up to $1,250 of installation credit, or a $500 sales credit instead. Confirm the current terms with your dealer.
