Silverado EV & Sierra EV Home Charger Installation: 48A or 80A?

The short version: the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV have a native NACS port and an 11.5 kW onboard charger as standard, and Chevrolet lists a 19.2 kW onboard charger as available on the Silverado EV. Which one your truck has decides whether you install a 60A or a 100A circuit. Every spec below is from Chevrolet's, GMC's and GM's own pages.

NACS Port on the 2027 Trucks

GM moved all of its 2027 model-year EVs to a native NACS port, and GMC calls the Sierra EV's NACS port standard. A 2027 truck takes a NACS charger directly, or a J1772 charger with an adapter — see NACS vs J1772.

11.5 kW or 19.2 kW: Which Circuit to Install

Chevrolet's 2027 configurator lists the 11.5 kW onboard charging module as standard and the 19.2 kW module as available (shown on the Silverado EV Trail Boss); the Sierra EV trim we checked (Denali Max Range) lists the 11.5 kW module. Check your truck's window sticker or build sheet for which one you have.

Onboard chargerGM charger that matches itCircuit
11.5 kW (standard)GM PowerUp 2 — up to 11.5 kW / 48A60A dedicated
19.2 kW (available)GM Energy PowerShift — up to 19.2 kW / 80A100A dedicated

Both circuits follow the same rule: EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is rated at 125% of the charging current (48A → 60A, 80A → 100A). A 19.2 kW car on a 48A charger still charges at 11.5 kW — it simply cannot use its extra capacity — so the 100A setup only makes sense if your car has the 19.2 kW module and your panel can carry it.

What Installation Involves

  1. Panel check and load calculation — especially for a 100A circuit, which a 200A service may not be able to spare.
  2. Permit — pulled by your electrician; see who issues EV charger permits in your city.
  3. Circuit and charger — a dedicated 240V run sized to the charger, then the charger mounted and connected.
  4. Inspection — the permit closes after the local inspection.

Cost depends on the circuit size, the distance from your panel and whether the panel needs work — see EV charger installation cost, panel upgrades and rebates by state.

Frequently Asked Questions

What home charger does the Chevy Silverado EV need?

For the standard 11.5 kW onboard charger, a 48A Level 2 charger on a 60A circuit — GM rates its PowerUp 2 at up to 11.5 kW / 48A. Chevrolet lists a 19.2 kW onboard charger as available (on the Trail Boss); to use it at full speed, GM sells the PowerShift charger at up to 19.2 kW / 80A, which needs a 100A circuit.

Do the 2027 Silverado EV and Sierra EV have NACS ports?

Yes. GM says all of its 2027 model-year EVs from Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC come standard with a NACS port, and GMC calls the Sierra EV's native NACS port standard. Check an earlier truck's port before buying a charger with a fixed plug.

Is a 100A circuit worth it for an electric truck?

Only if your truck has the 19.2 kW onboard charger and your panel can carry the extra load. A truck with the standard 11.5 kW module charges no faster on an 80A charger than on a 48A one. Your electrician should run a load calculation first; a 100A circuit is a large share of a typical 200A service.

Do I need a permit to install a Silverado EV or Sierra EV charger?

Almost always, if the job adds a 240V circuit. Your licensed electrician pulls the permit; our permits guide lists who issues it in 86 cities.
