Kia EV3 & EV6 Home Charger Installation: NACS Port, 48A & Circuit
The 2027 Kia EV3 — new to the US and in dealerships now, from $29,890 — and the Kia EV6 need the same home setup: a 48A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit. The one thing to check is the port, because Kia's NACS switch does not cover every EV6. Every spec below is from Kia's own pages.
Charge Port: NACS — With One EV6 Exception
| Model | Charge port | Onboard charger |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 EV3 (all trims) | Native NACS | 11.5 kW |
| EV6, 2025 and later (except GT) | NACS | 10.9 kW (2026) |
| EV6 GT, and EV6 before 2025 | Check your car — not covered by Kia's NACS announcement | — |
A NACS car takes a NACS charger directly or a J1772 charger with an AC-rated adapter, and the reverse — see NACS vs J1772 home chargers.
Circuit Size
Kia quotes Level 2 charging for both cars at 240V / 48A. EV charging is a continuous load, so a 48A charger needs a circuit rated at 125% of that — 60A. A plug-in charger on a 50A NEMA 14-50 outlet is limited to 40A, a little slower and sometimes a simpler install. If your panel is tight, see do you need a panel upgrade and Level 1 vs Level 2.
What Installation Involves
- Panel check — can it carry a new 60A circuit?
- Permit — pulled by your electrician; see who issues EV charger permits in your city.
- Circuit and charger — a dedicated 240V run, then the charger mounted and connected.
- Inspection — the permit closes after the local inspection.
Cost depends mostly on the distance from your panel and whether it has room — see EV charger installation cost and rebates by state.
Frequently Asked Questions
What home charger does the Kia EV3 need?
A 48A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit. Kia lists the 2027 EV3's onboard charger at 11.5 kW on every trim and quotes its Level 2 charging time at 240V / 48A. The EV3 has a native NACS port, so a NACS charger plugs straight in.
Does the Kia EV6 have a NACS port?
Kia moved the EV6 to a NACS port from the 2025 model year, but its announcement says the relocated NACS-compatible port excludes EV6 GT models. Check the port on an EV6 GT, and on any pre-2025 EV6, before buying a charger with a fixed plug.
Is the EV3 faster to charge at home than the EV6?
Slightly, on paper: Kia lists 11.5 kW for the EV3's onboard charger and 10.9 kW for the 2026 EV6. Both are covered by the same 48A charger on a 60A circuit, so the home installation is the same.
Can I charge a Kia EV3 from a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Yes. A plug-in charger on a 50A NEMA 14-50 circuit can draw up to 40A — about 9.6 kW, a little under the EV3's 11.5 kW limit. A hardwired 48A charger on a 60A circuit reaches the full rate.
