Chevy Equinox EV Home Charger Installation: NACS Port, Circuit & Charger

The short version: the 2027 Chevy Equinox EV has a native NACS charging port and an 11.5 kW onboard charger, so a 48A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit charges it as fast as the car allows. Everything below comes from Chevrolet's and GM's own pages, linked at the end.

Which Charging Port Does Your Equinox EV Have?

GM says it is moving all of its EVs to a native NACS port for the 2027 model year, and Chevrolet calls the 2027 Equinox EV's NACS port standard. That matters for the home charger you buy:

  • 2027 Equinox EV (NACS port): buy a NACS charger, or use a J1772 charger with an adapter.
  • Earlier model years: these are not on GM's native-NACS list. Look at the port on your car before buying a charger with a fixed plug.

Either plug works with the right adapter; see NACS vs J1772 home chargers for which adapter goes which way.

How Big a Circuit the Equinox EV Needs

Chevrolet lists an 11.5 kW onboard charging module as standard, and GM rates its own PowerUp 2 home charger at up to 11.5 kW / 48A — the pairing GM sells for this car. EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit must be rated at 125% of the charging current:

SetupCharging currentCircuitEquinox EV rate
Hardwired Level 2 (recommended)48A60AFull 11.5 kW
Plug-in Level 2 on a NEMA 14-5040A max50AAbout 9.6 kW
Smaller Level 232A40AAbout 7.7 kW

If your panel cannot spare 60A, a 40A or 32A setup still charges overnight for most daily driving. See do you need a panel upgrade and Level 1 vs Level 2.

GM's Own Home Charger: PowerUp 2

GM Energy sells the PowerUp 2 in a NACS version and a J1772 version, each at $899 MSRP and rated up to 11.5 kW / 48A. GM describes the NACS version as compatible with all NACS-native GM EVs. Any UL- or ETL-listed 48A Level 2 charger with the matching plug (or an adapter) charges the Equinox EV at the same rate; the GM unit is not required.

What Installation Involves

  1. Panel check. Your electrician confirms the panel can carry a new 60A circuit.
  2. Permit. The electrician pulls it — who issues EV charger permits in your city.
  3. Circuit and charger. A dedicated 240V circuit to the garage or driveway, then the charger mounted and connected.
  4. Inspection. The permit closes after the local inspection.

What it costs depends mostly on the distance from your panel and whether the panel has room. See EV charger installation cost for typical ranges, and rebates by state for utility programs that pay toward the charger or wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What home charger does the Chevy Equinox EV need?

A 48A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit charges the Equinox EV at its full 11.5 kW onboard rate. For the 2027 model, which has a native NACS port, a NACS charger plugs straight in; GM's own PowerUp 2 is sold in NACS and J1772 versions at $899 MSRP, both rated up to 11.5 kW / 48A.

Does the 2027 Chevy Equinox EV have a NACS port?

Yes. GM says it is moving all of its EVs to a native NACS (Tesla-style) charging port for the 2027 model year, and Chevrolet describes the 2027 Equinox EV's NACS port as standard. Earlier model years are not on GM's native-NACS list, so check the port on your own car before buying a home charger with a fixed plug.

Can I charge an Equinox EV from a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Yes. A NEMA 14-50 outlet sits on a 50A circuit, and a plug-in charger on it can draw at most 40A (80% of the circuit), which is about 9.6 kW at 240V — a little below the Equinox EV's 11.5 kW maximum. A hardwired 48A charger on a 60A circuit is what reaches the full rate.

Do I need a permit to install an Equinox EV charger?

Almost always, if the job adds a 240V circuit. Your licensed electrician pulls the permit; our permits guide lists who issues it in 86 cities.
